You guys!
I just watched Mary and Max, thanks to a coworker’s recommendation.  So wonderful, and sad, and cathartic.  And tender, really incredibly tender.  Watch it with kleenex or a dishtowel or gym shorts on hand if you’re feeling even a tiny bit emotional.  UGH, SO GOOD.

Frank X. Gaspar, "It Was So Dark Inside the Wolf" →
airwalker: All day with nothing on my mind, the soft old couch, the heating pad, a book of Tennessee Williams’s letters, tea, camembert, beer, soup, dozing, speaking in tongues off in my drowsing mind, invoking this or that god, thinking of raising my fortunes, thinking of all of this swimming forward without me someday, this bag of small wishes, the greatest sorrows indelible and indistinct in...

W. W. Norton: Nearly a Valediction →
wwnorton: You happened to me. I was happened to like an abandoned building by a bull- dozer, like the van that missed my skull happened a two-inch gash across my chin. You were as deep down as I’ve ever been. You were inside me like my pulse. A new- born flailing toward maternal heartbeat through the shock of cold and glare: when you were gone, swaddled in strange air I was that alone ...

Battered Woman Sentenced to 20 Years for Warning... →
Got this link via email today from St. Louis Ending Violence Against Women Network(SLEVAWN).  From the message body: “This is about a battered woman. This about a battered woman who used force.  This is about a black battered woman who used force.  This is about systems.  Oppression. “This is an excellent case study in how systems oppress at the intersections of race, gender, class,...

Going away
…this weekend for brother’s graduation.  Texas, are you ready?  (You never have been in the past, but that isn’t stopping me.)  The difficult thing about traveling this particular weekend is that I’m going to have to limit myself to one book and may not have room for my running shoes in my carry-on.  If you’ve been paying attention over the years, you may be as...

Orangette: No such thing →
I’m making this pound cake sometime this weekend.  And adopting Molly as my writing role model.  Just consider the following sentence: “Like a proper pound cake, it’s firm and buttery, but it gets a gentle lift from the citrus, both in flavor and in fragrance, and then, behind it, there comes the deep, toasty, rumbling flavor of the pistachios.”

nprmusic: It’ll take just a few seconds to find out if you’re likely to fall in love with Jolie Holland. In this intimate performance at the NPR Music offices, Holland plays songs from 2011’s Pint of Blood with an unadorned style that makes her lyrics and voice all the more touching.
